General James Cox

General James Cox, for whom our chapter was named, was the son of Judge Joseph Cox and his wife Mary. He was born in 1753 at Cox's Corners in New Jersey and died in 1810 at Upper Freehold, New Jersey. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the New Jersey Militia and was at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. When the militia reorganized, he was a Major and later a Brigadier General and Commander of the Monmouth Brigade. He also served the state of New Jersey as Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly and at the time of his death was serving his country as a Congressman from New Jersey. He was married to Anne Borden Potts and they had thirteen children. He is buried in the Old Yellow Meeting House Cemetery in Upper Freehold Township New Jersey.
